C&#8217;est le moment o&#249; l&#8217;adr&#233;naline redescend, o&#249; les pilotes - casque &#244;t&#233;, visages marqu&#233;s, &#233;motions &#224; fleur de peau - c&#233;l&#232;brent leur triomphe, pansent leurs blessures ou se laissent juste aller apr&#232;s 90 minutes de course palpitante. Sous les sprays de champagne et au son des hymnes nationaux, les &#233;motions affluent.</strong></p><p><strong>Mais si les c&#233;r&#233;monies actuelles sont parfaitement orchestr&#233;es, il y a eu des moments tellement inattendus : pilotes absents, trompettistes alcoolis&#233;s, et couacs avec les troph&#233;es. Prost, Patrese, Pironi et de&#8239;Cesaris se relaient &#224; la t&#234;te, Daly cale aussi. Finalement, c&#8217;est Patrese qui s&#8217;impose, apr&#232;s l&#8217;avoir red&#233;marr&#233;e en la poussant. Pendant ce micmac, Le Britannique James Hunt r&#233;sume : &#171;&#8239;On est tous &#224; la ligne d&#8217;arriv&#233;e, mais on n&#8217;a toujours pas de gagnant&#8239;!&#8239;&#187;</p><p>Et pendant que la confusion r&#232;gne, Elio de&#8239;Angelis - class&#233; cinqui&#232;me - re&#231;oit un coup de t&#233;l&#233;phone et monte sur le podium aux c&#244;t&#233;s de la royaut&#233; mon&#233;gasque... jusqu&#8217;&#224; ce qu&#8217;on r&#233;alise la boulette.</p><div class="native-video-embed" data-component-name="VideoPlaceholder" data-attrs="{&quot;mediaUploadId&quot;:&quot;b2ee924a-8781-42cb-b175-cdb8f129c6e8&quot;,&quot;duration&quot;:null}"></div><ol start="2"><li><p><strong>Prost jette son troph&#233;e &#224; la foule ; Ron Dennis est furieux (Italie, 1989)</strong></p></li></ol><p>Pour certains, les troph&#233;es n'ont que peu de signification &#233;motionnelle - mais pour Ron Dennis, directeur de l'&#233;quipe McLaren, ils &#233;taient une propri&#233;t&#233; sacr&#233;e.</p><p>Les tensions entre Prost et Dennis couvaient depuis le d&#233;but de la saison, apr&#232;s que Prost ait annonc&#233; son d&#233;part imminent pour Ferrari. Le geste de Prost sur le podium n&#8217;a pas &#233;t&#233; accueilli avec beaucoup d&#8217;enthousiasme.</p><p>Vainqueur pour la quatri&#232;me et derni&#232;re fois de la saison lors du Grand Prix d&#8217;Italie, Prost fut acclam&#233; par une foule de Tifosi en d&#233;lire mass&#233;e sous le podium. Selon la F1, l&#8217;ancien coordinateur de l&#8217;&#233;quipe McLaren Jo Ramirez se souvenait : </p><p>&#171;&#8239;Ils criaient &#8220;Coppa, Coppa&#8221;. Alain s&#8217;est dit &#8220;ce sera mon public l&#8217;an prochain&#8221;, alors il s&#8217;est approch&#233; et a simplement l&#226;ch&#233; le troph&#233;e. D&#232;s qu&#8217;il a touch&#233; la foule, il a &#233;t&#233; d&#233;membr&#233; en mille morceaux - l&#8217;un a pris une anse, un autre la base, un autre le centre...&#8239;&#187;</p><p>Ron Dennis, visiblement furieux de voir le troph&#233;e de McLaren dispara&#238;tre, a balanc&#233; le troph&#233;e constructeur aux pieds de Prost avant de quitter le podium en trombe. Depuis, la politique interne de McLaren exige que les pilotes remettent imm&#233;diatement leurs troph&#233;es &#224; l&#8217;&#233;quipe pour exposition.</p><div 1977)</strong></p></li></ol><p>Dans l&#8217;un des moments les plus absurdes de l&#8217;histoire des podiums F1, le pilote australien Alan Jones a remport&#233; son tout premier Grand Prix lors de la manche autrichienne de 1977. Alors qu&#8217;il s&#8217;appr&#234;tait &#224; monter sur le podium pour entendre son hymne national, les organisateurs - apparemment pris au d&#233;pourvu - n&#8217;avaient tout simplement pas l&#8217;hymne australien sous la main.</p><p>&#171;&#8239;Les organisateurs ne s&#8217;attendaient visiblement pas &#224; ce que je gagne, puisqu&#8217;ils n&#8217;avaient pas l&#8217;hymne national australien &#187;, confiait Jones &#224; formula1.com. &#171;&#8239;&#192; la place, un type ivre a jou&#233; &#8220;Happy Birthday&#8221; &#224; la trompette - et des trompettes, il y en avait beaucoup en Autriche&#8230;&#8239;&#187;</p><p>&#192; l&#8217;&#233;poque, ce sont souvent les organisateurs locaux qui g&#233;raient l&#8217;ensemble de la c&#233;r&#233;monie du podium. Les erreurs arrivaient de temps &#224; autre, surtout quand les &#233;quipes n&#8217;avaient rien pr&#233;par&#233;. Mais lors du Grand Prix du Japon en 1977, James Hunt et Carlos Reutemann ont d&#233;cid&#233; de passer leur tour.</p><p>La course est aujourd&#8217;hui surtout connue pour les pluies torrentielles et le brouillard qui ont balay&#233; le circuit, plongeant de nombreux pilotes dans l&#8217;inqui&#233;tude quant &#224; la s&#233;curit&#233;. Elle reste aussi tristement c&#233;l&#232;bre pour le crash dramatique entre la Ferrari de Gilles Villeneuve et la Tyrrell &#224; six roues de Ronnie Peterson, causant la mort d&#8217;un cam&#233;raman et d&#8217;un commissaire de piste. Mais l&#8217;un des moments les plus &#233;tranges du week-end est bien la c&#233;r&#233;monie du podium.</p><p>Hunt, vainqueur de la course, en avait assez de la politique en F1 et des conditions de course &#8211; il a tout simplement quitt&#233; le circuit pour attraper son vol. Reutemann l&#8217;a suivi peu apr&#232;s. R&#233;sultat : seul le troisi&#232;me, Patrick Depailler, est mont&#233; sur le podium pour f&#234;ter sa place, pendant que les officiels tentaient de sauver les apparences.</p><p>Des incidents comme celui-ci ont conduit la FIA &#224; renforcer les exigences concernant la pr&#233;sence obligatoire des pilotes sur le podium. Que ce soit un hymne mal choisi, un pilote absent ou un geste inattendu de vos rivaux, ces moments nous rappellent qu&#8217;en Formule 1 - malgr&#233; tout son professionnalisme - il reste une place pour l&#8217;impr&#233;vu.</p><p>Le podium n&#8217;est peut-&#234;tre pas l&#8217;&#233;l&#233;ment central d&#8217;un Grand Prix, mais c&#8217;est souvent le plus humain. En France, la presse les oppose : d&#8217;un c&#244;t&#233; Arnoux, le rebelle flamboyant, instinctif, impr&#233;visible ; de l&#8217;autre Prost, surnomm&#233; &#8220;le Professeur&#8221;, froid, m&#233;thodique, strat&#233;gique. Chaque course devient une question identitaire : <em>Qui est le v&#233;ritable h&#233;ros fran&#231;ais ?</em></p><p>Prost en souffre particuli&#232;rement. Lui qui s&#8217;est toujours senti incompris par le public fran&#231;ais. &#171; Quand je suis arriv&#233; chez Renault, la presse m&#8217;adorait. Mais en 1982, j&#8217;&#233;tais devenu le m&#233;chant. Mon erreur, franchement ? Avoir gagn&#233;. Les Fran&#231;ais n&#8217;aiment pas les vainqueurs. Ils pr&#233;f&#232;rent les perdants glorieux. &#187;</p><p><strong>Arnoux, martyr ador&#233;</strong></p><p>Il faut dire qu&#8217;Arnoux savait se faire aimer. Son temp&#233;rament de feu, son panache &#224; la fran&#231;aise, faisaient de lui une figure presque romanesque. Prost, lui, paraissait distant, c&#233;r&#233;bral. Dans un pays qui avait idol&#226;tr&#233; Fran&#231;ois Cevert, et m&#234;me Gilles Villeneuve, Prost restait une &#233;nigme.</p><p>Les deux s&#8217;&#233;vitaient en interview, s&#8217;envoyaient des piques &#224; peine voil&#233;es. Selon Heinz Pr&#252;ller, Arnoux aurait m&#234;me crach&#233; sur une photo de Prost dans un journal. Les fans se divisent. Les m&#233;dias attisent le feu.</p><p><strong>Une rivalit&#233; tr&#232;s actuelle</strong></p><p>Dans une &#233;poque o&#249; les m&#233;dias fa&#231;onnent les histoires avant m&#234;me que les pilotes ne les &#233;crivent, cette rivalit&#233; sonne &#233;trangement moderne. Des s&#233;ries comme <em>Drive to Survive</em> prosp&#232;rent sur la dramaturgie plus que sur la v&#233;rit&#233;. Parfois, l&#8217;histoire est impos&#233;e avant m&#234;me que les protagonistes ne puissent la vivre.</p><p>Ce n&#8217;&#233;tait pas juste Prost contre Arnoux. C&#8217;&#233;tait id&#233;ologie contre instinct. Image contre authenticit&#233;. Le surnom contre le mythe. d&#233;passe pas 1,5 m&#232;tre de large - ce qui obligeait les roues &#224; d&#233;passer largement de chaque c&#244;t&#233;, nuisant &#224; l&#8217;a&#233;rodynamisme et acc&#233;l&#233;rant l&#8217;usure des pneus. L&#8217;id&#233;e de Gardner : des roues avant plus petites, dissimul&#233;es derri&#232;re l&#8217;aileron. Cela permettait non seulement de r&#233;duire la tra&#238;n&#233;e et la portance, mais aussi de simplifier l&#8217;a&#233;rodynamique du nez, offrant un gain estim&#233; &#224; 40 chevaux. Pourquoi quatre roues &#224; l&#8217;avant ? Parce qu&#8217;ainsi, la surface de contact - et donc l&#8217;adh&#233;rence et le freinage - &#233;tait doubl&#233;e.</p><p></p><p><strong>Des d&#233;buts prometteurs</strong></p><p>La P34 fit ses d&#233;buts au Grand Prix d&#8217;Espagne 1976 avec Patrick Depailler. Elle fit sensation imm&#233;diatement. &#192; partir de la manche suivante en Belgique, Jody Scheckter rejoignit le projet. Et d&#232;s sa quatri&#232;me course, &#224; Anderstorp en Su&#232;de, la P34 r&#233;alisa un doubl&#233; historique : Scheckter l&#8217;emporta haut la main.</p><p>Sur deux saisons, Tyrrell enregistra une pole, une victoire et 14 podiums. En 1976, l&#8217;&#233;quipe termina 3e au classement constructeurs, et Scheckter 3e chez les pilotes.</p><p>Mais les pneus avant Goodyear, sp&#233;cialement con&#231;us en 10 pouces, n&#8217;&#233;taient pas &#224; la hauteur : trop peu d&#233;velopp&#233;s, ils s&#8217;usaient vite et manquaient de performance face aux pneus standards. La suspension avant, tr&#232;s complexe, ajoutait du poids, causant des surchauffes au freinage. Sur des circuits bossel&#233;s - la norme &#224; l&#8217;&#233;poque - la voiture devenait impr&#233;visible, l&#8217;adh&#233;rence fluctuant violemment. Malgr&#233; sa victoire avec la voiture, Scheckter d&#233;clara que la P34 &#233;tait &#171; une &#233;pave &#187;, &#171; incontr&#244;lable &#187;.</p><div class="native-video-embed" data-component-name="VideoPlaceholder" data-attrs="{&quot;mediaUploadId&quot;:&quot;a9c7a391-ab9b-4e08-9bb7-26353cc6f43e&quot;,&quot;duration&quot;:null}"></div><h3>L&#8217;h&#233;ritage d&#8217;un pari</h3><p>En 1977, les r&#233;visions alourdirent la voiture et diminu&#232;rent sa fiabilit&#233;. Les podiums disparurent, les abandons se multipli&#232;rent. Le coup fatal fut port&#233; quand Goodyear cessa de d&#233;velopper les pneus avant sur mesure. Fin 1977, Tyrrell abandonna le concept. Peu apr&#232;s, la FIA interdit toute voiture n&#8217;ayant pas exactement quatre roues.</p><p>Et pourtant, la P34 laissa une empreinte durable. D&#8217;autres tent&#232;rent l&#8217;aventure des multi-roues, jusqu&#8217;&#224; ce que le r&#232;glement ferme d&#233;finitivement la porte. DPPI</figcaption></figure></div><p>Toen Alain Prost zich in 1981 bij Renault voegde als jonge belofte, was Ren&#233; Arnoux al een doorgewinterde veteraan. Maar naarmate Prost steeds vaker begon te winnen - juist in een periode waarin Arnoux geplaagd werd door pech - begon de rivaliteit tussen de twee Fransen te gisten.</p><p>Toen Prost zijn allereerste overwinning boekte tijdens de Grand Prix van Frankrijk in Dijon, veranderde er iets in zijn zelfbeeld: hij was niet langer een veelbelovende rookie, maar een bewezen winnaar. Zoals hij zelf zei: &#8220;Voorheen dacht je dat je het kon. Een Franse overwinning, met een &#233;&#233;n-twee finish voor Renault, had een reden tot nationale vreugde moeten zijn - maar het podium voelde allesbehalve feestelijk.</p><p>Volgens Prost had Arnoux teamorders genegeerd die stelden dat - in geval van een Renault &#233;&#233;n-twee - Arnoux zijn teamgenoot moest laten passeren, zodat Prost zijn kansen in het kampioenschap kon vergroten. Beelden leken Prost&#8217;s claim te ondersteunen, maar Arnoux ontkende ooit iets van zulke orders te hebben gehoord. Hoe dan ook was hun band voorgoed gebroken. In Frankrijk werden ze tegenover elkaar gezet als karikaturen: Arnoux, de impulsieve, chaotische vechter; Prost, de kille, berekende &#8220;Professor&#8221;. Iedere race werd een volksraadpleging: <em>Wie is de &#233;chte Franse held?</em></p><p>Vooral Prost voelde die publieke druk. Al sinds het begin van zijn carri&#232;re heeft hij zich miskend gevoeld in zijn eigen land.</p><p>&#8220;Toen ik bij Renault kwam, schreef de pers positief over me. Maar tegen 1982 was ik de slechterik geworden. Achteraf denk ik: mijn fout was dat ik won. Fransen houden niet echt van winnaars. Ze houden van martelaren - mensen die groots verliezen.&#8221;</p><p><strong>De publieke opinie koos partij</strong></p><p>Arnoux speelde die rol van martelaar met verve. Zijn vurige rijstijl, zijn uitgesproken &#8220;Fransheid&#8221; - hoe je het ook wil noemen - maakte hem innemend. Hij was sympathiek. Prost daarentegen werd in de publieke opinie neergezet als zuur en berekenend. In een land dat zijn hart had verloren aan figuren als Fran&#231;ois Cevert en zelfs de Frans-Canadees Gilles Villeneuve, bleef Prost een buitenstaander.</p><p>In interviews meden ze elkaars naam of gaven elkaar openlijk sneren. Volgens journalist Heinz Pr&#252;ller zou Arnoux zelfs eens op een foto van Prost in een Franse krant hebben gespuugd. De fans raakten verdeeld in kampen. De media volgden gewillig.</p><p><strong>Een hedendaagse les</strong></p><p>In een tijd waarin media invloedrijker zijn dan ooit, voelt dit verhaal als een waarschuwing. Series als <em>Drive to Survive </em>gedijen op drama boven waarheid - en dit soort verhalen laat zien dat het narratief soms al geschreven is, voordat de coureurs het zelf kunnen bepalen. </p><p>Het was niet alleen Prost tegen Arnoux. Het was instinct tegen strategie, imago tegen echtheid, het ene archetype tegenover het andere. Dat betekende dat de standaard voorwielen boven en naast de vleugel zouden uitsteken, wat slecht was voor de aerodynamica en de bandenslijtage verhoogde. Gardner&#8217;s oplossing? Kleinere voorwielen, verstopt achter de vleugel.</p><p>Niet alleen verminderde dat de luchtweerstand en lift, maar het maakte ook aanvullende aerodynamische hulpmiddelen aan de voorkant overbodig - wat een prestatieboost opleverde die gelijk stond aan zo&#8217;n 40 pk. Door vier voorwielen te gebruiken in plaats van twee, kon Tyrrell bovendien het remvermogen en de mechanische grip vooraan behouden &#233;n versterken, dankzij het dubbele contactoppervlak.</p><p><strong>Verbluffende resultaten</strong></p><p>De P34 maakte zijn debuut tijdens de Spaanse GP van 1976, met Patrick Depailler achter het stuur van &#233;&#233;n chassis. De auto trok meteen alle aandacht. Later dat jaar, vanaf de Belgische GP, werd het project opgeschaald en kreeg ook Jody Scheckter een chassis.</p><p>Slechts vier races later, in Anderstorp (Zweden), leverde de P34 een sensationele 1-2 op: Scheckter won dominant met Depailler vlak achter zich. In totaal behaalde Tyrrell in twee seizoenen met de P34 &#233;&#233;n pole, &#233;&#233;n overwinning en veertien podiumplaatsen. In 1976 eindigden ze als derde in zowel het coureurs- als constructeurskampioenschap.</p><p></p><p><strong>Kinderziektes en kritiek</strong></p><p>Toch had het revolutionaire ontwerp duidelijke nadelen. De speciaal ontwikkelde 10-inch Goodyear-banden voor de voorwielen liepen achter op de reguliere banden qua ontwikkeling - ze sleten snel en presteerden matig. Ook voegde de complexe voorwielophanging gewicht toe, wat bij intensief gebruik voor oververhitte remmen zorgde.</p><p>Daarnaast bleek de P34 op hobbelige circuits - de norm destijds - zeer grillig. De grip wisselde voortdurend. Scheckter was ondanks zijn zege genadeloos in zijn oordeel: &#8220;Een stuk rommel. Het aantal podiums daalde, het aantal uitvalbeurten steeg. En toen Goodyear in 1977 stopte met de ontwikkeling van de speciale banden, viel het doek definitief. Aan het eind van dat seizoen liet Tyrrell het zeswielerconcept vallen. Kort daarna verbood de FIA alle auto's met meer of minder dan vier wielen.</p><p>Toch bleef het idee van multi-wielconfiguraties anderen inspireren - tot het reglement definitief een einde maakte aan dat tijdperk. Vandaag de dag is de P34 een vaste waarde in musea en historische races. 1982)</strong></p></li></ol><p>Herinnerd als een van de meest chaotische Grands Prix ooit, eindigde de GP van Monaco in 1982 met een podiumceremonie voor vier coureurs in plaats van drie - waarvan er &#233;&#233;n niet eens in de top drie was ge&#235;indigd.  </p><p>In de slotronden begon het te regenen en veranderde het stratencircuit in een ijsbaan. In ronde 74 (van 77) crashte raceleider Alain Prost bij het uitkomen van de chicane. Riccardo Patrese nam de leiding over, maar spinde kort daarna en leek eveneens uitgevallen. Didier Pironi nam over, maar viel stil in de tunnel door een ontstekingsprobleem. Andrea de Cesaris had kunnen winnen, maar had geen brandstof meer. </p><p>Derek Daly reed vervolgens voor wat de leiding leek, maar had eerder in de race al zijn voor- en achtervleugel verloren &#233;n een beschadigde versnellingsbak. Die begaf het twee ronden voor het einde. Ondertussen wist Patrese zijn wagen opnieuw te starten door deze de heuvel af te duwen, en won zo om miraculeuze wijze de race.  </p><p>In de chaos was niemand zeker van de einduitslag. BBC-commentator en voormalig wereldkampioen James Hunt riep: &#8220;Wel, we hebben hier een lachwekkende situatie: we staan met z&#8217;n allen bij de finish te wachten op een winnaar, en we lijken hem maar niet te krijgen!&#8221;</p><p>Te midden van de verwarring werd Elio de Angelis - die eigenlijk als vijfde was ge&#235;indigd - per ongeluk het podium op geroepen. Voor McLaren teambaas Ron Dennis was het heilig teambezit. </p><p>De spanningen tussen Prost en Dennis liepen in 1989 al maanden op, nadat Prost had aangekondigd dat hij naar Ferrari zou vertrekken. Tijdens de GP van Itali&#235;, waar Prost zijn vierde en laatste zege van het seizoen behaalde, stond onder het podium een zee van juichende Tifosi. </p><p>Volgens McLaren-co&#246;rdinator Jo Ram&#237;rez: &#8220;Ze riepen &#8216;Coppa, coppa!&#8217;. Alain dacht: &#8216;Dit zijn volgend jaar mijn fans&#8217;. Hij liep naar voren en gooide de trofee het publiek in. Die brak in duizend stukken - iemand nam het handvat, een ander de voet, weer een ander het middenstuk.&#8221;</p><p>Ron Dennis, woedend over het verlies van teambezit, gooide de constructeurstrofee aan de voeten van Prost en verliet furieus het podium. Toen hij op het podium stapte en het volkslied verwachtte, bleek men geen Australisch volkslied paraat te hebben. </p><p>&#8220;Ze hadden het duidelijk niet verwacht&#8221;, vertelde Jones aan Formula1.com. &#8220;Dus speelde een dronkaard &#8216;Happy Birthday&#8217; op een trompet - daar waren er veel van in Oostenrijk.&#8221; </p><p>In die tijd werden ceremonies nog grotendeels geregeld door lokale organisatoren, wat vaker leidde tot fouten met vlaggen of hymnes. Anderen&#8230; slaan het gewoon over. Tijdens de Japanse GP van 1977 bleven zowel winnaar James Hunt als nummer twee Carlos Reutemann weg van het podium. </p><p>Hoewel de race vooral herinnerd wordt vanwege de fatale crash van Gilles Villeneuve&#8217;s Ferrari en Ronnie Peterson&#8217;s Tyrrell waarbij een fotograaf en een race-official omkwamen, was het slotakkoord minstens zo opvallend. Hunt, ontevreden over de F1-politiek, stapte direct na de race in een taxi naar het vliegveld. Reutemann vertrok even later. </p><p>Zo moest Patrick Depailler in zijn eentje het podium beklimmen om zijn derde plek te vieren, terwijl officials hun best deden er nog een plechtige ceremonie van te Spaanse GP van 2012 was al verrassend genoeg - het was Williams&#8217; eerste zege sinds 2004 en Maldonado stond bekend als &#8220;Crashtor&#8221; Maldonado vanwege zijn onstuimige rijstijl. </p><p>Maar een even memorabel moment kwam na de race, toen Fernando Alonso en Kimi R&#228;ikk&#246;nen hem tijdens de ceremonie spontaan op hun schouders tilden. </p><p>Het beeld was onvergetelijk: twee wereldkampioenen die de verbaasde winnaar optilden alsof ze een nieuwe koning kroonden.</p><p></p><p>Podiumceremonies lijken tegenwoordig strak geregisseerd en voorspelbaar, maar af en toe breekt de chaos toch door. Of het nou een misplaatst volkslied is, een verdwaalde coureur, of een onverwacht kroonmoment - deze incidenten herinneren ons eraan dat Formule 1 niet alleen draait om techniek en precisie, maar ook om pure menselijkheid. </p><p>Het podium is misschien niet het meest essenti&#235;le onderdeel van een Grand Prix, maar het is vaak wel het meest memorabele. Copyright: TONY DUFFY/GETTY IMAGES</figcaption></figure></div><p>In the mid-seventies, F1 introduced a new regulation that stated that the front wing was to be no more that 1.5 m wide, which would cause the wheels to stick out above and to the sides of the wing. This would reduce aerodynamic properties and increase tyre age. Gardner&#8217;s concept: smaller front wheels tucked behind the front wing. Not only would this reduce lift and drag, but it would also allow for less aerodynamic aid at the nose, resulting in a gain equivalent to about 40 hp. The reason for using four wheels instead of two meant that front grip and braking area would be restored and even boosted, as it would have twice as much contact patches.</p><p></p><p><strong>Startling results</strong></p><p>The P34 had its debut race at the 1976 Spanish GP with Depailler testing in one chassis, and turned heads instantly. The full campaign later that year at the Belgium GP also featured Jody Scheckter. In only its fourth race at Anderstorp, Sweden, the P34 claimed a 1-2, with Scheckter piloting the six-wheeler to a dominant win. Across two seasons, Tyrrell scored one pole, one win, 14 podiums, finishing third in both drivers&#8217; and constructors&#8217; championships in 1976.</p><p>However, the custom 10-inch Goodyear tyres lagged in development &#8211; they wore quickly and were far behind the standard tyres. Furthermore, the complex front suspension added weight, causing the brakes to overheat during harder use. On top of that, performance suffered immensely on bumpy tracks, the standard at the time, with grip oscillating. Finally, a lack of tyre development sealed its fate: by 1977, Goodyear stopped supporting custom front tyres, and the project withered. By the end of &#8217;77, Tyrrell abandoned the design. Soon after, the FIA banned cars with more or fewer than four wheels. </p><p>The radical design prompted others to explore multi-wheels ideas until regulations shut them down - as the FIA banned cars with more or fewer than four wheels. Today the P34 is a museum icon, and at historic events replicas are built to period specs and even raced. The P34 remains one of the most daring experiments in Formula One&#8217;s history, and stands as a testament to the radical innovation and experimentation that shaped the history of proper film. No British riffraff, no French philosophising - just fast cuts, expensive equipment, and a big tough hero in the spirit of John Wayne. With the Netflix series <em>Drive To Survive</em> as the ignition and global F1 fever as the turbo engine, the inevitable was born: <em>F1: The Movie</em>. The cinematography is sharp, flashy, and occasionally even breathtaking. The camera gets so close to the asphalt you might twist your neck just watching. The young hero, Joshua Pearce - played by Damson Idris - could certainly be an emerging talent. But that&#8217;s about the only thing truly worth mentioning.</p><p>And the rest? A comical repetition of sports movie clich&#233;s we&#8217;ve seen a hundred times. A seasoned veteran with a lingering trauma who trots into the story like a lonesome cowboy type. A 61-year-old Formula 1 driver who - if that wasn&#8217;t already absurd enough - wins the season by ignoring every rule and shred of decency, and of course ends up being right. Then there&#8217;s a sponsor, played by Tobias Menzies, who plays a generic "bad guy" without much conviction or apparent reason - something the screenwriters didn&#8217;t seem to worry about.</p><p>The most enjoyable role comes from Kerry Condon, who plays the female race director of Sonny Haines (Brad Pitt). It&#8217;s unfortunate, though, that the film&#8217;s obvious nod to feminism - by giving both a female mechanic and a female race director significant roles - doesn&#8217;t amount to much more than a gesture. In the end, the women still need Brad Pitt to show them how a car works. It&#8217;s hard to imagine how they have managed to do their jobs so well without him. In short, everything checks the old Hollywood boxes, making it all feel like cardboard.</p><p>And then, of course, there&#8217;s Brad Pitt. Once a star actor, now a walking brand with a helmet on. He tries hard and it shows, but his character has the depth of a brochure, and the dialogue is painfully kitschy at times. When he says things like &#8220;Hope is not a strategy,&#8221; or &#8220;Plan C is for combat,&#8221; you can practically hear an eagle screeching in the background and feel a mild urge to gag.</p><p>Though the film offers massive entertainment value, <em>F1 The Movie</em> mostly lacks soul. Where John Frankenheimer dared to approach the races almost like a documentary in his 1966 <em>Grand Prix</em>, this film uses editing as its main weapon. Shot after shot, TikTok-worthy cuts, flashbacks, and emotion you have to search for between the crashes and the cheating. With Frankenheimer, you were in the cockpit; here, you&#8217;re on a carnival ride.</p><p>The comparison with <em>Grand Prix</em> makes it painfully clear: back then, they used real cars, real drivers, and real originality. <em>Rush</em>, on the other hand, had emotion, romance, and humor. Now we get undeniably beautiful visuals - sure - but also blown-up conflicts and a soundtrack that even Hans Zimmer himself must&#8217;ve found too bombastic and unoriginal.</p><p><em>F1 The Movie</em> is a spectacle, absolutely. But it&#8217;s an empty spectacle. Gorgeous visuals, roaring cars, lots of noise, a few good jokes, and the moment it&#8217;s over, you think: &#8220;Was that it?&#8221; Well, fine, but it&#8217;s a shame that the film has been force-fed to us for a year already.</p><p>For those who have no idea what Formula 1 actually is - or don&#8217;t take it all too seriously - it&#8217;s a pretty good movie. But for F1 newbies, I&#8217;d guess it&#8217;s too much. Then again, who knows? Does saying &#8220;DRS&#8221; like &#8220;Drag Reduction System&#8221; multiple times count as explaining what DRS means? The rest is mostly American nonsense at 300 km/h. y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>Na jaren van desinteresse, heeft men in Hollywood weer eens bedacht dat Formule 1 hot is en eindelijk eens een echte film verdient. Geen Brits gepeupel, geen Frans gedoe, gewoon snelle cuts, duur apparatuur, en een grote stoere held &#224; la John Wayne. Met de Netflix serie Drive To Survive als startmotor en de mondiale F1-koorts als turbo werd het onvermijdelijke geboren: F1: The Movie. Een film die de natte droom van een Amerikaanse marketingafdeling mag voorstellen.</p><p>Het ziet er prachtig uit. De cinematografie is strak, filtsend en af en toe zelfs adembenemend. De camera zit z&#243; dicht op het asfalt dat je spontaan je nek verdraait. Ook de jonge held Joshua Pearce, gespeeld door Damson Idris, zou zeker een opkomend talent kunnen zijn. Een komische herhaling van sportfilmclich&#233;s die we al honderd keer hebben gezien. Een doorgewinterde veteraan met een trauma, die zich als lonesome cowboy type, het verhaal in komt wandelen. Een 61-jarige Formule 1 coureur die, mocht dat nog niet gek genoeg zijn, het seizoen wint door alle regels en algemeen fatsoen aan zijn laars te lappen &#8211; &#233;n natuurlijk gelijk krijgt. Verder een sponsor, gespeeld door Tobias Menzies, die niet heel overtuigend een algehele &#8216;bad guy&#8217; speelt, waarom lijkt voor de scenaristen verder niet zo uit te maken.</p><p>De leukste rol komt van Kerry Condon, die de vrouwlijke race director van Sonny Haines (Brad Pitt). Wel jammer is dat juist de knipoog naar feminisme in de film, door zowel een vrouwelijke monteur als een vrouwelijke race director een grote rol te geven, ook niet veel meer is dan dat. De vrouwtjes hebben uiteindelijk toch Brad Pitt nodig om hun in te laten zien hoe een auto werkt, hoe ze hun werk zo lang zonder hem hebben kunnen doen is niet voor te stellen. Kortom, alles klopt precies in het oude Hollywood boekje, en dus voelt het allemaal als karton.</p><p>En dan is daar natuurlijk Brad Pitt. Ooit een steracteur, nu een wandelend merk met een helmpje op. Hij doet z&#8217;n best, maar zijn personage heeft de diepgang van een reclamefolder en de dialogen zijn af en toe pijnlijk kitsch. Als hij zegt: &#8220;Hope is not a strategy.&#8221;, of &#8220;Plan C is for combat&#8221;, dan hoor je in de achtergrond een arend schreeuwen, en voel je een lichte braakneiging opkomen.</p><p>Hoewel de film een enorme entertainment factor heeft, mist F1 The Movie vooral ziel. Waar John Frankenheimer in 1966 met zijn Grand Prix nog het lef had om de races bijna documentair te benaderen, kiest deze film voor montage als munitie. Shot op shot, TikTok waardige cuts, flashbacks, en emotie die je moet zoeken tussen de crashes en het valsspelen door. Bij Frankenheimer zat je in de cockpit, hier zit je op een kermisattractie.</p><p>De vergelijking met Grand Prix maakt het dan ook pijnlijk duidelijk: toen nog gemaakt met echte auto&#8217;s, echte coureurs, en originaliteit. Rush daarentegen had emotie, romantiek en humor. Nu krijgen we bijzonder mooie beelden, soit, en verder opgeblazen conflictjes en een soundtrack die zelfs Hans Zimmer toch te bombastisch en onorigineel heeft moeten gevonden.</p><p>F1 The Movie is een spektakel, absoluut. Maar het is een leeg spektakel. Mooie beelden, lekker scheurende auto&#8217;s, groot lawaai, af en toe een leuke grap, en zodra het voorbij is denk je: &#8220;was dit het nou?&#8221; Tja, prima natuurlijk, maar jammer dat de film dan al een jaar lang overal door je strot wordt geduwd.</p><p>Voor wie geen idee heeft wat Formule 1 eigenlijk is, of als je het allemaal niet zo serieus neemt, is het best een leuke film. Maar voor Formule 1 leken gok ik dat het dan weer te veel is. Maar goed, ik weet het niet. Telt DRS meerdere keren als Drag Reduction System uitspreken als een uitleg? Voor de rest is het vooral Amerikaanse nonsens met 300 km/h. Emotions, whether joy, relief, or heartbreak, are laid bare under champagne showers and national anthems. But while most ceremonies nowadays are polished and formulaic, a few have gone gloriously off-script: missing drivers, odd musical choices, or rows over silverware. 1982)</strong></p></li></ol><p>Remembered as one of the most chaotic Grands Prix ever held, the 1982 Monaco Grand Prix somehow finished with a four-man podium ceremony - one of whom didn&#8217;t actually finish in the top three. </p><p>When rain began to fall in the final laps of the race, it turned an already treacherous circuit into something resembling an ice rink. On lap 74 (of 77 in total), Alain Prost, leading the race, crashed exiting the Chicane du Port. Riccardo Patrese inherited the lead - only to spin out a lap later. Didier Pironi then took over, but a misfiring forced him to abandon the race in the tunnel. Andrea de Cesaris might have won, but he ran out of fuel before he got to overtake Pironi. </p><p>Next in line, Derek Daly, had already lost both his wings and severely damaged his gearbox in an accident earlier in the race: it finally seized up in the second-to-last lap, and he too retired. Meanwhile, Patrese had managed to restart his stalled car by rolling downhill and bump-starting, and miraculously made it across the line first to claim his maiden victory. In the commotion, no one was entirely sure who had finished where. </p><p>BBC commentator and 1976 world champion James Hunt famously said of the race &#8220;Well, we&#8217;ve got this ridiculous situation where we're all sitting by the start-finish line waiting for a winner to come past, and we don't seem to be getting one!&#8221; </p><p>Caught up in the confusion, Elio de Angelis was mistakenly ushered up to the podium - despite having finished fifth. Prost&#8217;s podium stunt was received with more than slight disapproval.  </p><p>Winning his fourth and final win of the season at the Italian Grand Prix, Prost&#8217;s victory was met with an extatic group of Tifosi standing beneath the podium. According to F1, former McLaren team co-ordinator Jo Ramirez recalled &#8220;They were calling out, 'Coppa, Coppa'. Alain thought &#8216;this is my public from next year&#8217;, so he came over and just let the cup go. As soon as it hit the crowd it was ripped into a million pieces - one took one handle, someone took the base, someone took the middle bit...&#8221; </p><p>Ron Dennis, visibly livid at the loss of McLaren&#8217;s silverware, hurled the constructor&#8217;s trophy to Prost&#8217;s feet and stomped off the podium. As he climbed the podium expecting a triumphant anthem, the organisers - apparently lacked a recording of the Australian anthem, not having expected Alan Jones to win. </p><p>&#8220;The organisers obviously didn&#8217;t expect it to happen because they didn&#8217;t have the Australian national anthem&#8221;, Jones told formula1.com. &#8220;[Instead] a drunk played &#8216;Happy Birthday&#8217; on a trumpet &#8211; of which there were plenty in Austria&#8230;&#8221;</p><p>At the time, local organisers handled much of the podium setup. Anthem mistakes happened occasionally when teams didn&#8217;t prep properly. But at the 1977 Japanese Grand Prix both James Hunt and Carlos Reutemann opted out. </p><p>The race is now more remembered for the effects of the torrential rain and fog that hit the track, causing many drivers to worry about driver safety. Of course it is memorable for the dramatic crash between Gilles Villeneuve&#8217;s Ferrari and Ronnie Peterson&#8217;s Tyrrell six-wheeler, resulting in the death of a cameraman and a marshall. But one of the most bizarre moments of the race weekend became its podium ceremony. </p><p>Hunt, having won the race, was fed up with F1 politics and the conditions - and simply left the circuit to catch his plane. Reutemann shortly followed. This left third-place finisher Patrick Depailler to mount the podium alone to celebrate, as officials scrambled to make the ceremony appear dignified. </p><p>Incidents like this led to the FIA tightening requirements around podium attendance, and F1 rules were quickly changed to make podium ceremony attendance mandatory. </p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a DPPI</figcaption></figure></div><p>When Alain Prost joined Renault in 1981 as a fresh young driver, his teammate Ren&#233; Arnoux was already an experienced driver. So when Prost started winning more regularly, during a particularly frustrating stroke of bad luck for Arnoux, the rivalry between the frenchmen began. When Prost won his first race at the French GP in Dijon, something shifted in his mindset: no longer the young rookie, but a race-winning hero. Where the French victory with a one-two podium finish for Renault should by any means have been cause for celebration, the podium was less than a joyous occation. According to Prost, Arnoux had failed to comply with team orders, which stated that in the case of a one-two finish Arnoux would have to let Prost past to help him fight for his place in the driver&#8217;s championship. Despite his claim being supported by television footage, Arnoux denied knowing that any such orders had been given, but their relationship was shattered. In France, they were packaged as opposites: the ragtag, free and unpredictable Arnoux, and the cold and calculated &#8220;professor&#8221; Prost. Each race became a referendum on &#8220;Who&#8217;s the real French hero?&#8221; These public tensions especially affected Prost, who has through his entire profession believed himself to be unfairly treated by the public. &#8220;When I went to Renault the journalists wrote good things about me, but by 1982 I had become the bad guy. I think, to be honest, I had made the mistake of winning! The French don't really like winners. It's hard to explain, but the French prefer martyrs who lose gloriously.&#8221; </p><p>Of course Arnoux was fantastic at playing the martyr, with his hotblooded fighting spirit, and his intricate &#8220;frenchness&#8221;, for lack of better terms. More than that, he was likeable. And in French public opinion, Prost was whiny and calculating. In a world where Francois Cevert and even the French-Canadian Gilles Villeneuve had never ceased to steal french hearts, Prost was an outsider. </p><p>In interviews they dodged each other&#8217;s names or called each other out in interviews. On one occasion, Heinz Pr&#252;ller stated that Arnoux spat at the picture of Prost in a french newspaper. Fans split camps. The media followed.</p><p>In a day and age where the influence of media has never seemed extensive, this story may pose a cautionary tale. Where fans and media have come to form an intrisic part of the sport, series like <em>Drive to Survive</em> have been able to thrive for their dramatic appeal rather than for their accuracy. For it shows that sometimes the narrative is imposed <em>before</em> the drivers can shape it. It wasn&#8217;t just Prost vs. Arnoux - it was ideology vs. instinct, image vs. authenticity, the associations of one nickname against another. F1 wasn&#8217;t just about who won.
